2. How Much Consulting to Give Away

Last week, s subscriber Teddy Ten Broeck at Publishers Press recently asked this, "My biggest challenge is how much information to give and how much and what info to sell. Can you help me?"

Yes, Teddy. I can help you. My co-author Jim Wilson would say, "Why do you want to do unpaid consulting? Never give away your expertise. Make the prospect hire and pay you!"

In Chapter 32 of our ebook, "52 Ready to Go Sales Meetings," we say, "Don't Give it Away Too Soon!"

Product knowledge is extremely important for every professional salesperson. It helps provide the salesperson with much-needed confidence and the clients with superior customer service. The trick is when to use it. The problem occurs where the salesperson divulges his or her expertise before determining the prospect’s needs and budget.

 

  • Ask a lot of open-ended questions and listen carefully to the responses.
  • Let your prospect do at least 70% of the talking. You’ll have plenty of time to ask lots of questions.
  • Remember to avoid using technical “buzzwords.” They can confuse, and even turn off, the prospect.
  • The purpose of your initial interview is to question and learn, not to educate.
  • Don’t become an unpaid consultant.
  • Often the prospect will take your information back to his current vendor or some other competitor.

Always remember, when you’re tellin’, you ain’t sellin’!

6. Smell the Coffee...

I've been visiting with our oldest daughters, granddaughter and son-in-law so this is a very short ezine this week. I did it ahead of time to be able to send it to you so even I don't know how much fun I had!

But I do know that Abbi will be performing show tunes for us on Saturday night and we're going to LOVE that. And Erin will be entertaining us with lots of stories...she's a good storyteller; she's a lawyer. And Madeline will be cooking us lots of goodies on that fancy stove we bought her for her second birthday. And I'll probably come back a couple pounds heavier and be all disappointed when I go to my WW meeting. And since we're driving, I'll be exhausted...but it will all be worth it. Maybe I'll tell you a story or two from the trip next week. Watch for next week's ezine and see. :-)
