1. Got a Great Idea?
I'll bet you have a terrific idea for a new book, product,
or business idea, don't you? Have you been sitting on it for
awhile? What's stopping you from moving forward?
My excuse is always time. There's never enough time to do
everything I want and need to do.
But that's just a big, fat excuse, isn't it?
If I made the project a priority, it would get done. Would
yours? What do you need to do to get your project completed?
I need to set aside at least one hour per day to work on new
products. It would be best if I could do this first thing in
the morning because that's when my mind works the best and
when I'm generally able to focus and accomplish what I set
out to do. It's my most efficient time of day if I use it
properly. When's yours?
I'm someone who is easily distracted. I start a project,
have to move on to something else because of deadlines, and
then never seem to get back to project one to finish it. Of
course, this only relates to things that I want to write or
create. Client projects always have deadlines, so I can
easily finish them on time.
I've found a couple of ways to get past this challenge.
Maybe these ideas will work for you, too.
Do the Mind Dump
What's a 'mind dump'? It's a gigantic 'to do' list. Just sit
down and write down everything you have to do, everything
you want to do and everything you might like to do in the
future. Don't forget to include all the little things you do
to keep your personal life and household running smoothly,
too.
The theory is that once you get it down on paper, you can
forget it and get back to working on the task at hand.
If you want to take it one step farther, then start putting
the items on your calendar or in your PDA. Remember that you
should only put about five things to do on each day, so
schedule your activities out to 30 or 60 or even 120 days if
you must. That will help you get rid of the guilt of always
having to reschedule things.
Set a Timer
Decide in advance how long you will work on a project. Set aside one or two hours for each project and then when the time is up, move on to another job. You'll be surprised how
much you can accomplish in such a short time. Pretty soon, your project will be done!
Set a Deadline and Tell Someone
It's hard to set a deadline for yourself, isn't it? But if
you tell someone you'll have it done by such-and-such a
time, you'll feel more compelled to finish it. It's called accountability. That's why Weight Watcher's works so well for everyone. Accountability.
Reward Yourself
At the end of each day, write down your accomplishments. It will feel so good! Plus, it will help stimulate you to accomplish even more.
Getting more done is often about being organized and
developing a system that works. In Paulette Ensign's '110
Ideas for Organizing Your Business Life,' you'll find lots of great tips to help you. In fact tips #56-#66 are all about organizing your time better.

2. Using a Direct-Mail Approach to Building Your Business
The other day I was listening to an Obvious Expert teleseminar in which Elsom
Eldridge, Jr. was interviewing David Frey, a well-known
marketing expert and the author of “The Small Business
Marketing Bible.”
David has created amazingly successful direct-mail programs
for his clients. And in the teleseminar, he explained his
three-step process using today's technology.
I found it fascinating. He chooses a niche, purchases or
develops a mailing list of his top 500 prospects for the
niche, creates an audio information product and then
develops his direct-mail promotion. All of that is pretty
normal.
The 2-CD audio set is an edumercial—meaning it is
designed to both educate the prospect and also be a
sales tool (commercial). So it's informative and useful
for the recipient, and they are consequently thrilled to
listen to it. He makes sure they want to listen to it by
giving the set a compelling title—something like: “Eleven
Little Known Facts and Secrets to Successfully Creating
a Five-Star Restaurant” or “7 Fatal Mistakes Every
Entrepreneur Makes and How to Avoid Them” or “9
Critical Things Every Health Spa Owner Should Know.”
The direct-mail promo is a three-part program, each
mailed two weeks apart. First, he sends a sales letter
offering the 2-CD audio information product for a fee—say $19.97. A certain percentage of the list responds.
Then he mails to those that didn't respond again, this time
offering the information product for FREE.
Finally, he mails the CD set to the remainder who didn't
respond (even though they didn't request it).
Now he has a good, targeted list of people who are likely
to be responsive to his mailings and he can sell them
consulting services, more information products, whatever.
All except the last few actually REQUESTED that he market
to them so they're going to be happy to hear from him in the
future.
The kicker is that in each of these three mailings, he
includes a personalized intro on the CD. That's right. The list
is comprised of maybe 500 people and he personalizes each CD!
How does he do that?
With today's technology, it's not really that hard. You can do it
from your computer. He records one basic message for the CD.
Then he records a one- to two-minute intro for each person on
the list, using the person's name. He does all the recording
before he mails anything out, and says it takes about two days to
personalize 500 CDs.
Wouldn't that blow you away if you received a direct-mail
package like that? It would me.

Small Business Marketing Bible

7. Smell the Coffee...
Well, I didn't even get CLOSE to finishing the painting in
our family room and sitting room. I did get the area painted
where the big-screen TV is going to be placed. So we can get
rid of the big ugly stage in our family room. My husband
also got half the stage removed so we could paint the
ceiling, which thankfully he painted.
Oh? I didn't tell you about our stage?
We've lived in this house for almost three years. At one end
of the family room, there's a stage--complete with curtains,
riser, skirting and an overhead valance. On top of the stage
sits a 57-inch TV, which we bought with the house because
the previous owners didn't have room for it in their new
house.
I think the previous owners built the stage when their kids
were small to encourage their children to perform and be
creative. Then, when the kids got older, they bought the TV
and just plopped it on the stage. It takes up a lot of room
in our family room and we plan to move the TV and shift the
focus from one wall to another.
So, the first thing I had to do was get the walls painted
where the televisions was going to be placed. And one of
those walls was a deep raspberry color, which is not easy to
paint over. Lowe's primer came through, though, and I only
had to do one coat of primer and two finish coats.
With Memorial Day behind us, the official picnic season has
arrived. It was a beautiful weekend here...except when we
went to our holiday picnic! Then it turned cold and rainy.
How was your weekend?
Have a good and profitable week.
Peace & Light,
Lois
