1. Do You Think This Will Get You a Story?

See this related information:

When I meet with prospects, I often hear them say things like:

  • "The newspaper always ignores us. No matter what we do, they
    never write about us."
  • "We sent out a press release and nothing happened!"
  • "My competitors were on the front page of the business section
today. That really burns me! Why do they get all the publicity and I don't?"

Sometimes, they even say they have called the reporter to complain that they were left out of a story.

If I was the reporter, that would definitely NOT be the way to win points with me. But you might consider:

  • Crafting a 30-second pitch to deliver by phone or in
    person about your story idea.
  • Developing a story idea that includes your competitors
and focuses on trends in your industry.
  • Including actual numbers—sales figures, number of
jobs created, and other hard numbers. Reporters LOVE it
when you can quantify your statements.
  • Writing a letter to the editor to express your opinion
    about a hot topic.
  • Contacting the reporter to offer additional information and
angles to the story that weren't covered in the original
    article—for a follow-up story.

Joan Stewart, The Publicity Hound, and Jill Lubin, co-author of "Guerrilla Publicity," recorded an excellent teleseminar, "Failproof Ways to Follow Up After Sending a News Release or a Story Pitch." You'll learn:

  • 2 things to focus on in your follow-up so you
    don't get sidetracked
  • 3 ways to get through the voicemail jungle in
    10 to 15 seconds
  • How to follow "The Rule of 7"
  • What to do if reporters don’t call back
  • 5 things the media hate
  • And lots more

The seminar is available as a CD or a downloadable transcript. Read more about it and order it here.

2. Fun Titles?

Last week, Brandee Brown, marketing and communications manager for McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group, wrote, "I came across your site while searching for inspiration for changing our job titles. As a boutique-style recruitment company in Vancouver, BC, we pride ourselves on our ability to stand out in a saturated market. We are definitely different and dedicated to fun, and we're on the road to taking our business even further in that direction.

"The problem lies in the mundane and predictable job titles we each hold. I am working to change each of them (there are only 6 of us, so it's not too daunting a task), and I was
wondering if you could offer any assistance. Any idea where else I'd look for job title inspiration? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I love your site, by the way."

I added that the trick would be inventing a new title while also communicating what each title means. And since Brandee didn't say what all 6 titles are, we assumed 2 of them are president and vice president. In addition to her marketing and communications manager title, that gave us 3 to play with.

Joan Stewart, The Publicity Hound says:

"The task of coming up with creative job titles shouldn’t be taken lightly, and certainly not quickly. Do it incorrectly, and you can come off looking foolish. If I were in your shoes, here’s what I’d do:

"Assemble about a half dozen of the most creative people you know, preferably those who work outside your organization. Get them all in a room, explain the position and job
description you want to name, then let them do a stream of consciousness brainstorming session. Give them a certain amount of time to come up with the best name they can think
of. Then move on to the next job title.

"And what’s in it for them? A spa package for each of them. Or dinner for two to a swanky restaurant. Or a pair of box seats to the ball game."

Before you start this exercise, read this article on job titles and the Brainy Tidbits article, "Brainstorming with a Twist."

And Lois says...I think the time of fun titles has really passed and you should reconsider this idea. But if you are sure you want to go ahead, there are several obvious titles
that you could consider. Head Honcho for the president; Moneykeeper for the CFO; The People Person for the HR director; The Communicator or The Buzz Agent for marketing
and communications.

Instead of changing your job titles, why don't you work harder to create a buzz about your company? Now THAT'S something I can get behind. You can create some terrific
special events to attract new customers. Here are some great CDs (downloadable transcripts also available) about creating a buzz (put your company on the map!):

  • In Case of Emergency (ICE)

Do you know that paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's identity and to find nearest kin? You can make their job much easier with a simple idea: ICE. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone number of the person emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your time. I've found that if you capitalize ICE (no spaces between), the cell phone directory will automatically put this listing
at the beginning of your phonebook (which is handy for calling these loved ones, too). Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. ICE your cell phone
now!

7. A Little Fun

A newly established public relations consultant, wanting to
impress the first prospective client coming into his office,
picked up the telephone and said, "I'm sorry, but I have a
tremendous workload at the moment and I won't be able to
work on your campaign for at least a month."

He then hung up, turned to the young man who had just
entered his office and asked, "What can I do for you, sir?"

"Nothing," replied the young man. "I'm just here to hook up
your phone."

8. Smell the Coffee...

I had the pleasure of listening to lots of music over the weekend. My husband and I went to Jazz in the Park in Staunton, Va., on Thursday night. That was terrific. Before picking Don up from work, I purchase a lovely cold supper for each of us at Sue's Super Nutrition, a natural foods store. We sat in the park, ate, listened to music, watched the audience, and had a fun time.

Friday we went to Court Square in Harrisonburg and listed to an alternative rock band, Moossa. They were very entertaining, and we had a good time. We saw several people
we know, visited and had a delicious picnic of smoked salmon, French bread, fresh mozzarella cheese, and a few other goodies.

Saturday we did lots of running around—going to the farmer's market, taking the kids places, and the like—then we enjoyed listening to Massanutten's Blues Festival from
our balcony. Being able to hear music for free is a delightful benefit of living in a resort community.

I hope your weekend was full of fun, too. Have a good and profitable week.

Peace & Light,
Lois
