1. My Favorite Search Engine, Google, Has New Tools
I love Google so much, I've made it my home page. I think
it's the fastest and most useful search engine available
today. And lately, they just keep making it better.
A few weeks ago I told you about the new desktop search
feature from Google. Of course, this one has a few potential
problems--especially if you use a public computer like those
at the library. The desktop search feature allows you to
search your computer as quickly and efficiently as you
search for something online with Google. But if you use a
public computer, it also allows others to search to see what
you've just done and would likely compromise your privacy
and financial security if you do any ordering online from
such a computer (which I don't recommend, anyway!).
Now, Google has two new features I want to tell you about.
BOOK SEARCHES
Google has recently introduced "Google Print" that allows
you to search for books online and read portions of them,
similar to the way Amazon does it. You can search by subject
or title. Just type, "Books about:[subject]" in the search
tool bar. For instance, I typed, "Books about: sales
strategies" and got pages and pages of responses.
Here's what Google has to say about this new BETA service:
"To use Google Print, just do an ordinary Google search. For
example, when you search on 'Books about Ecuador Trekking'
or 'Romeo and Juliet,' and we find a book that contains
content that matches your search terms, we'll show links to
that book at the top of your search results. Click on the
book title and you'll see the page of the book that contains
your search terms, as well as other information about the
book. You can also search for other topics within the book.
Click 'Buy this Book' and you'll go straight to an online
bookstore selling it. If the book was scanned from a
library, click the library link to find a local library that
has it."
If you're a publisher, this new feature can be a real boon
to your business. You can submit your books to be included
in Google's search results by going here
and signing up. And it's
FREE! Do it and soon you'll be selling more books.
GOOGLE SUGGEST TOOL (BETA)
This new feature just launched last week. It not only
completes words in a drop-down list, showing 10 possible
ways to complete any word you begin to type in the search
box, but it also shows how many times that option was
searched in Google! And it's not based on your search
history, but on what others have typed. Keyword research has
just gotten easier!
Click here to get to this feature.
Happy searching!

2. How to Get New Clients the Low-Tech Way
I'm sure you've noticed that the number of subscribers to
this ezine has gone down. That's because last week I changed
newsletter delivery providers and anyone who wanted to stay
on the list had to resubscribe. Anyone who didn't click on
the link included in the first email was given one more
chance to subscribe by going to my website and filling out
the form.
I sent out two notices of the change, and I'm still getting
notices of "new" subscribers today. I'm sure more will get
on board over the next few weeks as they realize they are no
longer getting the ezine. (Or not...)
One of the most interesting things about this experience was
finding out more about my subscribers--YOU. I'm learning
what industries my readers serve, what your most pressing
needs are and how I can help you. By far, the most frequent
response to listing your biggest challenge is "getting
clients." The second biggest response so far is "publicity."
So I'll try to focus on these two issues a bit more in
future newsletters.
The other thing I learned is that if you’re currently producing an ezine and thinking of changing from one list management company to another, you will most definitely lose subscribers. You can count on it. I went from almost 1,700 subscribers to 546. That's quite a drop. But perhaps the rest of my subscribers weren't really reading it anyway.
Now let's get started. In this issue I'll give you an idea for getting new clients
without having to be a technology genius.
One proven way to get new clients is to give speeches to
groups that are comprised of potential clients. Of course,
this means you have to develop one or more speeches that
would interest your target market, come up with a creative
title for it, and offer it to appropriate groups.
Most of these organizations don't have a budget to pay you,
but that's okay, because you're not trying to build a public
speaking business (or are you?). You're trying to show off
your expertise and experience so potential clients will
hire you.
Here's a brief "To Do List" to help you get started:
Evaluate your areas of expertise.
Choose one to promote.
Consider the questions your clients ask you.
Can you create a speech around these frequently asked
questions (FAQs)?
Develop a creative title for your speech.
One of my former clients, June Schroeder of Women's
Financial Services, has a speech titled, "How to Avoid
Becoming a Bag Lady." Joan Stewart, The Publicity Hound,
offers "Hey Boss, Mike Wallace is on Line 2!--Survival Skills for Meeting the Media" and "How to
Get Thousands of Dollars in Free Publicity."
You'll notice
both speakers focus on the BENEFIT the listeners will
receive. Be sure to focus your title on the benefits of the
audience, too.
Create your speech.
Make it informative, interactive, and entertaining.
Practice your speech.
Practice it so many times you can give it without a stumble
or an "um."
Research and contact potential organizations.
Find out who the program chair is and offer to present the
speech at one of their membership meetings. Don’t know what groups are out there? Check the calendar listings in your local business journal and weekly and daily newspapers.
When you are giving your speech, give each attendee a 3" x
5" index card and ask them to write their name, company
name, address, phone, and email on it. Also tell them to
write this at the bottom of that side of the card: Y-N-I-W-T-T-I-O. Create interest by telling them to put the card
aside and you'll talk about it more later.
When you've finished your speech, say something like, "Now
let's get back to the index card. I asked you to write
IWTTIO on the bottom. Anyone know what that means?" When no
one does, tell them it means "I want to think it over, and
that really means 'no,' doesn't it? So just cross that out.
Now you're left with Y or N, where Y means 'yes' and N means
'no'. Circle the Y if you would like me to call you to set
up a meeting or N if you don't want me to call you" (or
whatever you want to promote.) When I do this exercise, I
focus on whether they would like to be added to my ezine
list.
This is a very low-tech way to drum up business, but it
works quite well. You can also have them write their biggest
challenge on the back of the card.
You may be feeling intimidated about speaking. After all,
it's the number one fear for most people. Trust me. You can
get over this fear. It's a matter of learning the techniques
and practicing your speech. There's an excellent program
available to teach you how to be a better speaker. Read more
about it here.
