What Are You Serving?

I just got my first check from Google! And it was SO easy. All I did was add a little bit of "script" to my websites (provided by Google).

And Google started "serving up" pay-per-click (PPC) ads on each page of my sites. People clicked on the ads, and I made money.

I must admit, it was just a tad confusing at first ... since I'm not a trained webmaster. I started it on my Marketing Idea Shop website and instead of using a template to add the script to each page, I spent HOURS adding it individually to each page. That was pretty dumb, but you live and learn. Plus, I didn't know a couple of other things about getting results with AdSense (that's what the Google program is called) at the time. Like it's best to have "no border," and the placement on the page can also be important.

What I did was try different placements on each page -- some at the top, some at the bottom, some on the right side. Unfortunately, there's no way to track which placement works best unless you do it sitewide because Google doesn't share
where the clicks come from.

I also left the border whatever color the default was set to, and BLUE isn't a particularly complementary color for my website. Then my friend Adriana Copaceanu gave me a few pointers. So I changed the border to my logo color and got a few more clicks. I also read that if you place the Google ads right above your article, you'll get more clicks, but a lot of times, I'm not willing to do that. I want you to read my articles, not click off to someone else's ad. So, sometimes I do it this way and other times, I don't. But my numbers keep going up, so I'm doing something right!

On my women business owner site I designed Google AdSense right into the initial design, and this time it's on the template so I can easily change the placement or color sitewide.

2. Creating Passive Income Part Two by Lynn Terry

Last week we told you a little bit about creating passive income with search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per- click (PPC) advertising. If you didn't read that article, you can go here to read it now.

So continuing that discussion...

Once you know exactly what term or phrase people are searching for - and how they are searching for it - it pays to take a close look at the competing web pages or advertisers. Then you have a good idea of exactly what it will take for you to jump in and claim your stake! Wordtracker can help you figure this out.

Now, if you don't already have your own product(s), there are two ways you can get started. You can find a great affiliate program, and then research the market. Or you can find a great market, and then search for a complementary affiliate program. I use both of these methods, depending on
which I happen to run into first.

(Some marketers will argue that you need to find the market first... but I'm going to assume that you are smart enough to know whether or not a product has a decent market -- and then brainstorm the best ways to approach them!)

6. Smell the Coffee...

It's a beautiful day today. Life is good. The cable guy (no, not Jim Carrey) is coming around noon to switch our cable provider. More channels, better ones, and better reception for the same rate, with a one-year contract so they can't raise the price!

This week (Thursday) I'll be 53. Until I turned 50 I never felt my age. I always felt younger. Now I'm moving a little slower. (I wonder if it might be the extra 50 pounds I've been carrying around for a few years? We'll see, since I've given myself the challenge to take it off this year and
Weight Watchers is helping me.)
